Address by the ATOPCON President at the 2017 World Habitat Day Held In Lagos State

Gentlemen of the Press,

Ladies and Gentlemen.

 

The WORLD HABITAT DAY is the day set aside to recognize the basic rights of all human being to adequate shelter, and to encourage grassroots action towards improving livability. Therefore, the Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria’s partnership with the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, in giving awards of livability to deserving communities in the three senatorial districts of the State.

 

The ATOPCON/ LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT COMMUNITY LIVABILITY AWARD as part of today’s event to commemorate the World Habitat Day is the second edition of the award. The award is aimed at encouraging active involvement of communities in promoting functional, healthy, safe and clean communities.

 

The selections of the winning communities for the year 2017 award were based on the

(1) The general state of the environment and

(2) The livability of the Communities/ Estates

Please note , it is not only enough for an estate or neighborhood to be beautiful but it must be seen to have complied with statutory regulations governing  building approvals in Lagos State.

 

Three Communities/Neighborhood/Estates from the 3 Senatorial District were finally selected as winners of the 2017 ATOPCON/ LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT COMMUNITY LIVABILITY AWARD.

They are

Mayfair Garden Estate, Awoyaya, Ibeju Lekki          –           Lagos East Senatorial District

Oniru Chieftaincy Family Estate, Victoria Island       –           Lagos Central Senatorial District

County Estate, Agege.                                         –           Lagos West.  Senatorial District

 

CONCLUSION

This award, we believe will encourage the improvement and functionality of neighborhoods / communities in the State, enhance community participation at improving their livability to promote sustainable living. ATOPCON, still hopes that subsequently Government will encourage winning communities by carrying out developmental projects in such communities based on their most pressing need. This is to encourage the community and other communities in the State to show more commitment to their livability conditions, improve the standard of living, enhance the environment, and give a sense of community self-help in human settlement development.
